This book became all the hype on Instagram a while ago so I decided to read it. Also, the title does make you want to read it.
What this book is about:
Death-Cast is a company that calls people the day they are going to die and tells them about this prediction.
Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio get their calls on the same day and find each other on an app called "Last Friend". They spend their last day together and try to live this day as their best day.
Getting straight to the point, this book didn't live up to my expectations.
The title tells you the ending. When you've read the first few pages, you know the beginning. Now all that is left is the main plot of the book, which is just too predictable.
I did like the message of the story (live every day to the fullest) BUT I wish it was stronger. I didn't find the characters living their last day like it was really their last day. They were always cautious and too worried about dying.
If you ask me, it doesn't make sense to be afraid of what might happen when you know you're going to die today.
I wanted to know more about Death-Cast and how it worked but I understand that wasn't the point of the book.
One thing I genuinely liked was the element of friendship. All the moments of true friendship were wholesome and heart-touching.
Another nice thing about the story was that side characters were given importance and had their own bits of stories to tell. The narrative often switched to random people's POVs.
The next two paragraphs are a bit of a spoiler so read at your own risk.
The friendship between Rufus and Mateo was beautiful but suddenly they started drifting towards being lovers and declared their love.
It just didn't feel right for them to fall completely in love in less than 24 hours. It made me sad, honestly. I was really loving their friendship.
End of a sort of spoiler.
One thing I expected to do after reading this book: crying my eyes out.
Did I do it? No. I did feel sad but not enough to cry.
And that's coming from a very sensitive person.
I just didn't feel attached to the characters much. Knowing that they would die by the end of the book, I was prepared for it so it didn't have a great emotional impact on me.
These were all the things I didn't like and the few things I liked about this book.
These are all just personal opinions. A lot of people liked the book (it has a good rating) so you never know if you'll like it until you've read it.
So go ahead and read it!
